METU is one of the most respectable institutions of Turkey owing to the quality academic education that emphasizes merit and excellence in scientific and intellectual studies, since 1956. Today, METU employs about 2,400 academic members while offering education to over 30,000 students. These members use a huge campus (4,500 ha) and transportation services play a significant role in their campus life. After analyzing the data on-hand, the observed leading symptoms in the current in-campus transportation system are dissatisfaction of the members due to unmet transportation demand, inefficient usage/shortage of the resources, significant increase in the noise and air pollution of the campus. These symptoms become more problematic each year with the increasing number of the members. Therefore, there is a need of improvement in the transportation system which constitutes the motivation for our project. Considering these symptoms, the aim of this project is a demand-driven and enviromentally-friendly new in-campus transportation system.
