Production Scheduling System Design and Application

In defense industry, varying demands of each customer are required using scarce resources in most efficient way. First step of using these resources efficiently is to have a schedule that has a sense of optimization. Currently, the sponsoring company, FNSS, relies on foreman’s decisions in manufacturing department. However, this system does not help tracking the situation of shop floor, making forecasts about future utilization levels, and more importantly it is questionable on the optimization aspect. This project aims to deliver a decision support system that generates daily/weekly schedules for each work center in a way that the makespan is minimized. An intuitive algorithm is used to generate near-optimal schedules in short times even on standard PCs. In addition to an average reduction around 20% in the makespan, the resulting software that is working as a VBA based Microsoft Excel add-in gives the user the chance of making various analyses.
